SMALL AND SIMPLE steps makes BIG difference in our life, We are either GOOD side of the curve or BAD side of the curve. Small GOOD habits takes us upward and small BAD habits takes us downward curve over time. We don’t notice the impact of small habits, eating McDonald’s burger doesn’t kill us in one day but eating it daily will have critical impact over time like heart disease or obesity but we don’t see these things happening to us.
I have applied the same CONCEPT to my Health and Finances. I like the IDEA of keep doing small things each day to stay healthy, NOTHING DRASTIC NOTHING BIG. I spend around 30-40 mins each morning to do a few small things which has done wonders for my life and keeps me fit and Healthy.
1. Daily walk: 20-25 mins or 2-3 kms
I don’t like running so much, it doesn’t work for me but the WALKING is perfect. I like a quick walk daily, I just go out each morning around 7 am, regardless of weather conditions. I rarely change my schedule because of the weather unless it’s really not a suitable condition. Sometimes, I use this time while walking to call my family or friends or listen to music which serves multiple purposes.
We have couple of small parks close to our home and I simply walk to the park and at the same time I look for things to shoot for my Instagram @atwalspace pictures, sometime it’s early morning Fog, birds, Squirrels, Fall colors or Sunrise.
This comes down to about 7200 mins walking yearly or 1100 km yearly, Actually, I am doing a lot more than that because I average close to 5 km daily walk and I have just considered 3 km to come up with 1095 km which is just for the morning time.
2. Stretching: 5 mins
I am a SOFTWARE PROGRAMMER by profession and I do a lot of sitting for almost 8 hrs a day which of course killed my back. I used to have sitting problem and back pain was killing me for years. I went to see Doctor and Chiropractor 6 years back who suggested bunch of exercises, it was costing me $75 for every visit to see Chiropractor and one think I learnt is that I need to do small exercise for my back and I need to keep doing that for years. I stopped many times in between and back pain comes back, which is one of the main reason it has become my daily routine now.
I do stretching right after I come home from my morning walk, I do this specifically for my BACK PAIN and some additional stretching, I can probably write another blog about how I fixed my BACK PAIN problem. I found a few exercises which changed my life and I don’t have a back problem anymore. I am doing this daily (except weekends ) for the last 5-6 years.
This comes down to about 1300 mins of stretching yearly.
3. Meditation: 3-5 mins
I have been involved in many small business these days and it has it’s effect, it gets stressful. I need something like MEDITATION to relax my mind to keep my focus and keep me going.
Just quick meditation to relax my mind, It’s simply breathing IN and OUT and keep on focusing on breath. My mind always wonder around but I keep trying to bring it back to breathing. I was always thinking that what’s the point if our mind is always wondering but it does make new connections when we bring it back and we improve at this when we keep doing this for long period of time. This helps to keep stress free mind.
This comes down to 1300 mins of Meditation Yearly.
4. Push up: 2-3 mins and 35 push ups
I believe Push ups are not absolutely necessary compare to above three steps but this one is damn helpful to improve your body. For years, I wanted to improve my upper body and I never had time to go to GYM, so I decided to start doing few push ups at home. It just started with 10 years ago and I am able to do about 50 Push up as of today at the time I am writing this. I am happy with 50, I think it’s doing the job. Recently, I bought the Resistance Tube to add some exercise for Shoulders and Biceps as well, just couple of mins daily.
Two sets of 25 and 10 push ups and just in 2-3 mins only. That’s about 9000 push ups yearly.
5. AVOID ELEVATORS
AVOID USING ELEVATORS for at least 3-4 floors. Luckily, I live on the 3rd floor and my work is on the 3rd floor as well. Averagely, I make 3-4 trips up and down and that is lot of stairs to climb. This has become routine and does not even feel anything specially done but this is definitely helping me a lot. I have young kids and I have to pick them up many times while going up and down. Bringing Groceries upstairs is quite a task every week.
6. NO SOFT DRINKS AND CHIPS FOR HOME
Our kids always give us tough time when ever we bought Soft drinks or Chips for home. They just want to drink and eat that and constantly keep on asking. So, Now I never buy soft drinks or chips for home. It’s SIMPLE, you cannot eat it if you don’t have it at home. But kids gets to eat and drink when ever we travel outside, so we don’t try to control kids or our self too much when we are eating out because that’s the only Junk food we will get.
7. HOME MADE FOOD
I grew up in India in small village and eating out is not a thing there, it is so special that mostly people do that on Weddings or special functions and rest of the year it’s simply HOME MADE FOOD. I love home made, there is no comparison. We pretty much eat home-cooked food for all three meals with the exception of eating lunch outside with coworkers very occasionally. We dine out on special days during year and We like to eat a little bit outside when we are travelling.
THIS HELPS STAY HEALTHY AND SAVE MONEY.
8. REPLACE JUNK FOOD WITH NUTS
Everyone wants to munch on to something when we are home. Who doesn’t want to eat something while watching late night movies, between breaks. We always crave for something to eat and we can feed the beast with some GOOD STUFF. I buy all kinds of NUTS which is perfectly healthy to eat. I prefer Walnuts, Almonds, Cashew, Raisins etc.
9. BUY SMALL PORTIONS AND SHARE
We all like junk food and my kids love to go to McDonald’s (just a few times a year when ever we get the COUPONS, lol).
We eat like a family and we like to buy small portions and SHARE, kids never had their own separate soft drink yet, They are still small and they don’t yet that they can have their own drinks and Fries. DON’T TELL THEM. They share from our drinks and we avoid getting refills. This way, we eat outside and JUNK Food but just not too much.
Did I tell you that it saves MONEY as well which I don’t over spend anyway.
10. BALANCED DIET
We are no VEGANS and neither VEGETARIANS, We eat all kind of food including MEAT products but NOT TOO MUCH. We use chicken more than other meats but it’s rarely FULL MEAL. We normally mix chicken in other items like Wraps with lot of vegetables and little bit of Chicken and in Pasta or Noodles. We eat lot of Lentils, Vegetables, Bean, Bread etc. No too much Salads though, Never get used to eating Leaves.
BBQ, of course, you are not Canadian if you don’t do BBQ, Russel Peter said that. If you don’t know who he is then it’s too BAD, go watch him on You tube. He is hilarious.
I am hoping, I have messed up your head little bit !! I had most fun writing this Blog. GOOD LUCK:
